Greetings from Anime Detour

Thanks for your interest in volunteering or staffing! We at Anime Detour always need willing and helpful volunteers to make the convention run smoothly. :) If you would like to become involved with Anime Detour there are a few things you should know:

  1. All staff and volunteers are required to be registered members of the convention. This means get your registration submitted and paid for! Signing up to volunteer does not automatically register your for the con nor does it entitle you to a free membership!
  2. We have a lot of people who want to volunteer. Please, be specific in what you want to do! We appreciate your enthusiasm, but without any ideas where people want to be or what skills they bring makes it very difficult to place them. If you really have no idea, volunteer as a badger or gopher!
  3. If you wish to become more active in the convention planning, then please attend some of our meetings. Meetings: [Info].

Again, thank you for your interest in helping us make this convention happen. This is something we hope to do again and again. The first part is building a solid group of staff and volunteers who will be with us from year to year. Here's hoping you'll be one of the team!

Volunteering Descriptions

For those who wish to volunteer, we have plenty of opportunities even at night. The volunteer would sign up for 1 hour or longer shifts with the volunteering department. About 10 minutes before the shift the volunteer would check in with volunteering and then go on duty. Have the department staff who saw the volunteer on duty, sign off on the volunteer card.

We have a pre-convention volunteering training meet and greet where attendees can learn more about how volunteering works. This allows attendees to sign up for some shifts ahead of the convention.

General Volunteer Information

A badger is a person who stands guard at entrances to convention hallways and programming. These people check to make sure people have their convention badge in a visible place.
Panelists and Moderators:
These people moderate the panels and events at the convention. Anyone who submits a panel suggestion and is accepted will take charge of a 1-2 hour panel. These people make the convention very exciting with the varieties of topics for discussion.
Charity Auction Assistant:
Charity auction Assistants will be working with all of the charity auction staff and items. They will help move all items from the charity auction room to the Garden Court. They will also be showing off the items during the auction, AKA being ‘Vanna White’. Also running any errands the Charity Auction staff might need of them.
Consuite Assistant:
People who help run the minute by minute needs of the consuite. This may include putting out more snacks, using a rice cooker, or changing of pop canisters.
Cosplay Assistant:
These people will help the Cosplayers during the Cosplay Contest Saturday night. Any help with costumes or just a need for food/water, the Cosplay Assistant will take care of them.
Gaming Assistant:
These people monitor and take care of issues in the game rooms. Common tasks include monitoring the entertainment, switching games units, and other miscellaneous tasks.
Programming Head Counter:
Yes, a head counter. This person will be walking to each of the programming rooms and counting how many people are in each of the rooms. All statistics will be brought back to the Volunteer room at the end of the shift.
Registration Assistant:
These people work at the registration desk. They help distribute registration badges and packets, and generally assist in the needs of the registration.
Video Room Assistant:
These people handle the hour-by-hour details of running anime for our video rooms. These people will swap DVDs, play previews, change "now showing" posters, take head counts, straighten chairs/clean between shows, and monitor the rooms.
Elevator Assistant:
Someone who maintains order with people using the elevators. One person will remain on the first floor and allows a set number of people on the elevator. The second person will be on the second floor asking people to step off the elevator so it is clear for first floor con-goers.
Convention Services Assistant (16+):
These people would help in the basic tasks performed by the Convention Services Front Desk at Anime Detour. Typically, this would be simple things such as answering basic questions from attendees and parents, and providing simple items (such as tape, glue, or pens) to people who request them. Additional activities can include cross-checking the Registration database and handing out badges after normal Reg hours, handing out or exchanging and logging radio equipment, and checking the Lost and Found collection.
